Such contrasts effectively convey the eternal dichotomy of human love. It portrayed how love can evoke pity and repulsion, blending passion with destruction, and life with death. Having said that, the film managed to develop the theme of love/hate with extreme ferocity. She killed any sense of sexual tension and her acting seemed out of keeping with the others'. The screenplay, written by Andrea Arnold and Olivia Hetreed, is based on Emily Brontë s 1847 novel of the same name. This made her character quite difficult to understand and I found it hard to imagine how the brooding, precarious Heathcliff could be so infatuated with her. Wuthering Heights (2011 film) Wuthering Heights is a 2011 British romantic gothic, period drama film directed by Andrea Arnold and starring Kaya Scodelario as Catherine and James Howson as Heathcliff. At times, she over-acted whilst at others she lacked any expression at all. Whilst Fiennes exploded in scenes such as breaking into the chapel, I found Binoche very stilted in her "emotional" scenes. Indeed, without Fiennes, the film would have been too under-rated and even slow. However, the film's quality came from the amazing performance of Ralph Fiennes whose sexual magnetism and intensity stole the screen. Supporting cast were notable, particularly Janet McTeer and Simon Shepherd, who was very touching at times, especially with young Catherine. The film was visually a masterpiece, capturing essential decadence in its set and on location in Yorkshire. The screenplay was very good and at times even excellent, although I would not put it in the same league as "Dangerous Liaisons". The "film" aspect of the film however, is outstanding: lighting, sets, costumes, and direction are all top notch (and I really hate to mislead, the performances are great for their day), but it's the original material that makes this film so worthwhile, rather than any contributions the filmmakers make. After all these impressive reviews, there is not much else for me to say except that, on the whole, this film worked for me. A lost stranger comes to the broken down estate of Wuthering Heights, lost in the moors. I was surprised to learn the role of Heathcliff was performed by the venerable Sir Laurence Olivier, it was a performance that seemingly could've been done by any reasonably handsome actor of his day. Wuthering Heights is the 1939 adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel by the same name. I get the feeling the film doesn't do justice to the novel (even having never read the novel), with it's somewhat shallow performances and a lack of exposition or character development. The music is hauntingly beautiful with the brooding moments having a shade of melancholy, of all the Wuthering Heights adaptations only. It's a story that starts off with the promise of romance but ends on a bitterly cynical note. His beloved Cathy isn't interested in becoming a stable boy's wife, even if she does love Heathcliff. Even though this is just a 105-minute film, it manages to include all the major plot points of the novel, from Lockwood to the second generation and does mostly in costumes of the right historical periods. Olivier's Heathcliff is filled with nothing but impotent rage as he lashes out at the upper class which he oh-so-briefly had a taste of. Only a couple adaptions touch at some of the poetry, and I find this 1992 one titled Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights pretty good. He's then told the tale of the ghost, and how it came to be. He's put up by the hostile Heathcliff, and during the night sees a ghost. Wuthering Heights is the 1939 adaptation of the Emily Bronte novel by the same name.
